Abu Dhabi, Dubai utilities to connect water networks

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) have announced a memorandum of understanding with the aim of connecting their water networks.

The deal between the utilities in the UAE’s two largest emirates will eventually see the exchange of potable water in emergencies and the establishment of strategic water reserves.

“This agreement supports our joint efforts to promote water security in the UAE, and achieve the objectives of the National Agenda of the UAE Vision 2021 to ensure a sustainable environment and preserve water resources in the UAE,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA.

Both sides began a coordinated study for possible options for water interconnection between the two emirates in 2007 with the aim of preventing water crises and shortages.

The new MoU will see DEWA and ADWEA expand on this through a feasibility study for water interconnection between the two networks.

Under the plans, the two companies will agree on a consultancy services tender, list of bidders, bid evaluation and the awarding of a tender that will include consultancy services for preparing studies and detailed designs for the connection points.
