Home UAE Dubai Dubai’s RTA awards Dhs447m contract for Deira Islands bridges The bridges will be the main connection points to Deira Islands by Robert Anderson October 21, 2018 Dubai’s Road’s and Transport Authority (RTA) said on Saturday it had awarded a Dhs447m ($121.6m) contract for the construction of three bridges to the upcoming Deira Islands development. The bridges will link with the existing bridge across the water canal and comprise six lanes in each direction. They come under the wider Shandagha Roads Corridor works. RTA director general and chairman Mattar Al Tayer said the bridges aimed to improve connectivity to the island at the intersection of Al Khaleej and Abu Baker Al Siddique Streets. The main bridges span 1.6km, while an additional 140m bridge will be constructed alongside a slip road on the Deira Islands side. The existing bridge link to Deira Islands will also undergo repaving and other improvements including railing, traffic signs and street lighting. Read: Dubai’s Nakheel awards $121.6m Deira Islands bridge contract “The project includes a two-lane bridge offering free-flowing traffic from Deira Islands to Al Khaleej Street northward; a three-lane bridge providing free traffic from Deira Islands to Al Khaleej Street southward, and a two-lane bridge offering free traffic from Al Khaleej Street southward to Deira Islands,” Al Tayer said. “The project will enhance the capacity of Al Khaleej Street over 1.8km stretch from Abu Hail intersection northward to Al-Baraha Hospital southward. Two signalised intersections will be added at the intersection of Al Khaleej Street with both Abu Hail & Abu Baker Al Siddique Streets. These improvements are part of future improvements of Shandagha Roads Network.” The wider Deira Islands project, under development by Nakheel, comprises four man-made islands reclaimed from the Arabian Gulf.
