A 16-year-old girl died after falling off the balcony of her 17th floor flat in Dubai while trying to ‘take a selfie, local media reported on Saturday.

The girl allegedly stood on a chair at the edge of the balcony, attempting to capture herself with the emirate’s skyline as the background. In the process, she lost her balance and tipped over.

She died instantly, media reports said, with sister reportedly witnessing the incident.

Dubai Police has encouraged the public to be mindful of such actions and for parents to monitor their children.

More than 259 people have reportedly died between 2011 and 2017 while taking selfies, a global study by US National Library of Medicine found last year.

Researchers recommended designating dangerous areas as ‘no selfie zones’ to curb selfie-related deaths.

In 2017, Dubai Municipality also issued a warning after a series of precarious photo stunts were attempted by enthusiasts at high-rise buildings. A clip posted on social media saw Russian model Viki Odintcova hanging off the side of the Cayan Tower in Dubai Marina by holding onto the cameraman’s arm without any restraints.

The municipality directive obliged building owners and operators to provide surveillance to prevent unauthorised people from infiltrating roofs and high beams in their buildings.
