Four-year-old child dies after being left behind in a bus in Ajman

A four-year-old child died of suffocation after he was forgotten in a minibus in Ajman for at least four hours on Monday.

According to Ajman Police, the boy – an Arab national who was attending a talent development centre, had fallen asleep inside the bus and was left unattended for four hours.

Brigadier general Abdullah Saif Al Matrooshi, director general of Police Operations at Ajman Police, stated that they received a report from Amina Hospital in Ajman on Monday evening about the case.

Following an investigation, police found that the bus supervisor had neglected to drop off the child at the centre because he did not notice him sleeping on the bus.

When they realised that he was missing during lunch time at noon, staff searched for him and found him in a critical condition inside the bus.

They took him to the hospital after they were unable to provide him with first aid at the centre.

“Upon arriving at the hospital, the child died as a result of lack of oxygen and overheating in the bus. Accordingly, the case was transferred to the Public Prosecution,” Al Matrooshi said.

Police investigations revealed that the centre was practicing an activity contrary to what was registered in the commercial licence, which was found to have expired more than a year ago.

The centre’s manager, the bus attendant and driver have all been arrested.

Al Matrooshi urged for the follow-up and monitoring of children wherever they are, whether at home or in summer camps, especially with the high temperatures in summer.
