Kuwait has opened registration for children aged 5 to 11 to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, the country’s Ministry of Health announced on Saturday.

After registering online on the ministry’s website, legal guardians of the children will receive a text message on the date, time and place of vaccination, the ministry said.

A plan will soon be announced to streamline vaccinations for this age group, it added.

The move is part of the health ministry’s strategy to limit the spread of coronavirus infection.

Kuwait reported 12 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, raising the total infections in the country to 412,653.

No deaths were reported, with the total fatalities standing at 2,461.

The country also reported 34 additional recoveries, with 366 others receiving treatment including six cases in ICUs.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US granted emergency use authorisation of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 after a high-level medical panel endorsed the shots.

Kuwait started vaccinating teenagers aged between 12 to 15 against Covid-19 in July, ahead of the start of the new school term in September.
