The UAE banking sector has made a gradual recovery from the global financial crisis, and more specifically, from domestic difficulties flowing from the sharp downturn and weakness in the real estate sector.
On the whole, UAE banks have generally come through the financial challenges challenges of the last couple of years. Their positions have been aided by stronger capital adequacy positions, particularly compared to most international markets.
Moreover, liquidity and funding issues have improved and leverage within balance sheets has fallen. However, funding on the wholesale side remains difficult and continues to be costly.
