The move is part of a broader strategy by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) to support Abu Dhabi’s smart city development and advance its digital infrastructure. The initiative is provided by DMT in collaboration with UAE service providers. It provides public Wi-Fi coverage in various locations, including public parks (19 in Abu Dhabi, 11 in Al Ain and 14 in Al Dhafra Region). DMT said it will extend Wi-Fi coverage to Abu Dhabi Corniche beach and Al Bateen beach. “We are proud to offer this service, ensuring connectivity for everyone across all locations. Abu Dhabi’s global ranking at 13 out of 141 cities in the IMD Smart City Index 2023 reaffirms our commitment to openness, innovation, inclusivity and sustainability, validating our dedication to smart city development,” said Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, chairman of DMT. Abu Dhabi retained its title as the smartest city in the Middle East and North Africa for the third consecutive year, thanks to the infrastructure and digital services that are available to citizens and residents, a study by the International Institute for Management Development revealed in May. Smart cities contribute to the development of many key sectors in the emirate, such as the smart transportation sector and the smart economy, which is based on advanced software that helps develop many sectors such as supply, delivery, and joint support services. Abu Dhabi’s smart city milestone Meanwhile, DMT partnered with three major city service and technology providers including e& Group and Huawei to advance smart city projects, implement AI solutions, and capitalise on the latest technology trends in smart city development. Abu Dhabi launched the pilot phase of the Automated Rapid Transit (ART) project on Abu Dhabi Island in October. The ART project, which is being implemented by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the DMT, is aimed at developing an integrated and smart public transportation system that supports local development. The transport regulator said the ART contributes to enhancing mobility options for residents and visitors in Abu Dhabi.
