Abu Dhabi’s Etihad announces new baggage policy

Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways has introduced a new baggage policy based on weight rather than the number of checked bags.

The airline said the change would provide greater convenience to customers on most flights, excluding those flying to the US and Canada.

The new checked baggage limits are 23kg for economy deal, 30kg for economy saver and classic, 35kg for economy flex, 40kg for business class and 50kg for first class.

Guests in the Residence on Etihad’s A380s will be able to bring four bags weighing 32kg each.

Exceptions to the new policy will apply in some markets.

“The switch to a policy based on weight rather than the number of bags simplifies our allowance system and provides greater convenience and customer benefit while enhancing the travel experience,” said executive vice president for commercial Mohammad Al Bulooki.

In addition, Etihad Guest Silver, Gold and Platinum members will continue to receive a complimentary excess baggage allowance of 32kg on US and Canada routes.

This will lower to 10kg, 15kg and 20kg for each member level respectively on all other routes.

Etihad is currently undergoing a strategy review after posting a $1.87bn loss in 2016.
