Ajman University: A pioneer for education, inclusion, innovation and social impact

UAE-based Ajman University (AU) continues to be a pioneer for inclusion, innovation, and social impact. Established in 1988 as the first private university in the GCC, it was the first university in the UAE to admit expatriate students.

Ranked among the top 700 global universities, AU offers 35 programmes, 22 undergraduate and 13 graduate, all of which are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Education. In 2020, it became one of the first six higher education institutions in the world to receive global accreditation from the Quality Assurance Agency, UK’s independent body and a global leader in quality assurance for higher education.

The 2021 QS World University Rankings lists AU also as one of the top 750 universities globally with the fourth most international students and sixth most international faculty among institutions worldwide.

Meanwhile, the ‘Top 50 under 50’ QS rankings names AU as one of the top 150 young universities anywhere. In 2019, they were also awarded ‘Five QS Stars’ in the categories of social responsibility, inclusiveness and learning environment.

International academic exchange programmes
A select few students from Ajman University, College of Medicine recently had the opportunity to undertake short-term research internships at Malaysia’s Universiti of Malaya. The internships were arranged by AU as part of its International Academic Exchange Programme with partner universities abroad.

Moreover, AU students from the College of Engineering & Information Technology also recently had the opportunity to undertake internships at UC Louvain Belgium as part of the exchange programme.The select few AU students gained international perspective, an appreciation of cultural diversity and the finer nuances of an engineering education in international context. AU students also recently attended short-term summer programmes at some of the world’s leading universities, including Yale University in the US.

The university’s electrical engineering students can now earn a Master’s degree from Temple University in US, in addition to their Bachelor’s degree from AU, in just five years under the 3+2 dual degree arrangement. According to a recent agreement signed between AU and Temple University, AU students with good academic standing can opt for this dual degree arrangement between the two universities.

AU has also tied-up with Rutgers University to offer a dual degree programme, enabling students to obtain a bachelor’s degree from AU and a master’s degree from Rutgers University in just five years. This option is limited to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree programme, with the electronics and communication concentration.

Training programmes
As part of its efforts to provide its students with the most industry-relevant learning, AU has renewed its partnership with PwC Academy, one of the largest training providers across the Middle East.

The extension of the partnership aims to offer training and resources through developing a sustainable workforce and provide additional training programmes for students. It jointly engages students in CSR initiatives along with additional guidance and counseling to support their upskilling.
