Apple iPhone 6 UAE’s most popular handset in Q2

Apple’s iPhone 6 was the most popular handset in the UAE in the second quarter of the year, according to the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

In a report covering the April 1 to June 30 period, the TRA said 77.81 per cent of all handsets registered on the country’s networks were smartphones.

Of these the top five were the iPhone 6 (4.17 per cent), Nokia 108 (2.99 per cent) Samsung Galaxy J100H/J1 (2.45 per cent) Apple iPhone 6S (2.32 per cent) and Apple iPhone 5S (2.29 per cent).

The iPhone 6 was also the most popular handset in Q1 but the 5S decreased in popularity quart-to-quarter

However, despite its strong showing in the top five Apple was not the most popular manufacturer in the market.

The TRA said one-third of all handsets registered during the quarter were manufactured by Samsung (33.3 per cent), followed by Nokia (27 per cent), Apple (13.6 per cent) and Blackberry (1.8 per cent).

Unsurprisingly this meant the Samsung Apps store was by far the most visited applications website, followed by Apple’s iTunes and Android applications.

UAE smartphone and fixed internet users made 24 billion visits to social networking sites during the period, with visits to Facebook accounting for 90.39 per cent and Twitter 5.18 per cent.

LinkedIn, MySpace and Maktoob made up the top five.
