Dubai airport’s northern runway to also briefly close for maintenance

Dubai International airport’s northern runway will also be briefly closed on Friday, Sunday and Monday for maintenance, Dubai Airports announced on Thursday.

The airport’s southern runway is currently in the midst of a 45-day closure (from April 16 to May 30) for a major rehabilitation project.

The northern runway closures will take place from 5pm to 7pm on Friday, May 24, from 4pm to 7pm on Sunday, May 26, and from 5pm to 7pm on Monday, May 27, a statement said.

It will undergo “necessary maintenance and upgrades as part of the ongoing runway rehabilitation programme”, Dubai Airports stated.

“The closures have been carefully planned during the least busy period of the day and in close coordination with airlines and other service partners involved in airport operations, to minimise flight disruptions and keep passenger inconvenience to a minimum,” it said.

Passengers travelling on the mentioned dates have been urged to check their flight times before heading to the airport and to check with their respective airlines for any updates.

The southern runway refurbishment has already led to some flight cancellations as well as diversions to Dubai World Central.

Overall, the number of flights across the Dubai Airport system has been reduced by 19 per cent with a seat reduction of 20 per cent.

The southern runway was nearing the end of its design life and required a complete upgrade to accommodate future traffic growth, according to Dubai Airports.
