Home UAE Dubai Dubai approves $353.9m drainage contract around Expo 2020 site A second phase will increase the contract to more than $680m by Staff Writer September 17, 2017 Dubai deputy ruler, minister of finance and chairman of Dubai Municipality HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum has approved the awarding of a Dhs1.3bn ($353.9m) contract for rain and groundwater drainage around the Expo 2020 site. The contact covers districts around Al Maktoum International Airport, Expo Dubai 2020 and urban centres over an area of 400 square kilometres. A second phase will bring the total cost of the project to Dhs2.5bn ($680.6m). This will include a deep tunnel network for the collection and disposal of rain and groundwater that will be sufficient for “the next 100 years”, according to Dubai Municipality director general Hussain Nasser Lootah. The system has a capacity of 6.5 million cubic metres of water per minute. Last week, authorities revealed a legacy plan for the expo site that will see it transformed into a business and residential district.
