Home Industry Retail Dubai bans disposable phone chargers Companies have been given a month to halt the sale of disposable chargers by Staff Writer May 17, 2017 Dubai Municipality has taken the unusual step of banning the sale and circulation of one-time use phone chargers in the emirate. The decree is in line with health and safety standards and is in part to prevent the impact of the disposal of these electronics on the environment, according to UAE state news agency WAM. “They are also increasing the quantity of electronic waste included in general waste, which constitutes an environmental burden. As well as the environmental damage, these chargers also cause financial loss to the public due to their short life,” said Redha Salman, director of the health and safety department at the municipality. A brief inspection of electronics websites in the UAE shows the devices are sold by several retailers. The municipality called on all establishments operating in the emirate not to import or sell any disposable non-rechargeable one-time use mobile phone chargers and return them to the country of origin or re-export them within one month from the date of issuance of the circular. Those that fail to do so will be considered in violation of the provisions of Local Order No. 11 of 2003 on public health and safety of the society. “All necessary legal procedures will be taken against violating establishments in accordance with the applicable rules and regulations,” Salman added. 0 Comments
