Home UAE Dubai Dubai becomes first UNESCO creative city of design in Middle East The emirate joins a global network of 180 cities by Staff Writer June 4, 2018 Dubai has become the first urban centre in the Middle East to be appointed a UNESCO creative city of design. The UNESCO Creative Cities Network was created in 2004 to promote cooperation among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for urban development. It now has 180 members from 72 countries covering creative fields such as arts and crafts, design, film, literature, and media arts. “Our Dubai city’s history with UNESCO reflects its deep rooted concern and commitment to culture and heritage,” said Dubai Municipality director general Dawood Abdulrahman Al Hajiri. “Design is beyond the product; rather it is the framework by which problems are solved. It puts people and their needs first to convert trash into energy, improve quality of life, increase sustainability and promote happiness.” The emirate’s efforts in the creative field include fashion free zone Dubai Design District and a growing lineup of art exhibitions and galleries.
