Dubai: Drivers fleeing accident scene face Dhs20,000 fine

The Dubai Police said drivers who flee an accident scene face legal consequences including a Dhs20,000 fine and/or jail time.

The authority’s accident investigation experts use innovative technologies to identify accident causes and track down offenders.

To identify traffic offenders and take legal action against them, the Dubai Police have highly-trained detectives who can probe whether an accident was caused by a natural cause or is connected to criminal conduct.

Article 49, Clause 5 of the Federal Law on Traffic stipulates that individuals failing to stop at an accident they caused or were involved in, resulting in injuries, can now face both jail time and hefty fines.

Through collaboration with agencies such as the General Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the General Directorate of Traffic, the General Department of Operations, the General Department of Forensic Evidence and Criminology as well as the Roads and Transport Authority, Bur Dubai Police Station has successfully resolved previously unsolved traffic cases.

The force’s efforts are aligned with the vision of Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, and the oversight of Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs.

Brigadier Abdullah Khadem Sorour, Director of Bur Dubai Police Station, emphasized the police’s dedication to enhancing security and safety in the region while aiming for a significant reduction in traffic accidents with zero fatalities per 100 inhabitants.

Dubai Police Al Qusais station’s milestone

The Al Qusais Police Station recorded no traffic-related deaths in the jurisdiction area during the first half of 2023, compared to nine traffic-related deaths recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Brigadier Sultan Abdullah Al Aweys, Director of Al Qusais Police Station, highlighted the importance of the jurisdiction area, as it spans nearly 77 sq. km and encompasses a diverse range of residential, commercial, and industrial zones, including Al Nahda, Al Twar, and Al Muhaisnah.

Brigadier Al Aweys lauded the collaborative efforts of the Traffic Records Section in the station, in coordination with the General Department of Traffic, which led to this remarkable achievement.

He emphasized that the effective implementation of a range of programmes and traffic campaigns, combined with the expertise of well-trained patrol officers, has played a crucial part in enhancing road safety and ensuring the safety and security of all road users.
