Dubai Police shuts down desert camp; levies Dhs50,000 fine for breaching Covid-19 rules

Dubai Police shut down a desert camp that organised a private gathering, in which precautionary Covid-19 measures were violated.

In a video posted by Dubai Media office, people were seen flouting Covid-19 guidelines. Dubai Police coordinated its effort with Dubai Tourism to shut down the camp.

The operator was fined Dhs50,000, while each participant was slapped with a penalty of Dhs15,000.

This follows a day after Dubai Police issued fines worth Dhs50,000 to several people who held a private party on a commercial yacht and were observed to be violating Covid-19 precautionary measures.

The UAE has recorded a recent surge in Covid-19 cases during the past few weeks, prompting authorities to put into play a set of new rules that went into effect from February 2.

Among the directives, pubs and bars will be closed, whereas hotels will be required to operate at 70 per cent of their total capacity.

The UAE reported 2,798 cases on February 8, raising the nation-wide case count to 329,293.
