Dubai’s DEWA awards Dhs1bn contract for substations

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded a Dhs1.05bn contract for the construction of electricity transmission projects in the emirate.

The contracts will cover a 400/132kV substation, two 132/11 kV substations, and 75km of 132kV ground cables, a statement said.

DEWA is rapidly boosting its infrastructure and upgrading the capacity and efficiency of electricity transmission networks to meet growing demand for power in the emirate.

The authority is currently working to build 85 132/11kV substations over the next three years at a total value of Dhs9bn, and six 400/132kV substations worth Dhs2.4bn.

There are currently 252 132/11kV substations in Dubai, including 16 inaugurated in 2018.

In 2017, 21 400kV substations were completed, with 1,150km of ground cables.

“We aim to support and upgrade the capacity and efficiency of the transmission networks by providing a distinctive infrastructure and service facilities, to meet the sustainable development needs of Dubai,” said Al Tayer.

“We consider the highest standards in quality and safety when building substations and we adopt the latest technologies, to serve Dubai’s ambitious urban and economic plans,” he added.

DEWA is also working to increase the production of clean and renewable energy and has launched smart initiatives, as part of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.

Under the plan, Dubai aims to meet 7 per cent of its energy needs from clean sources by 2020, 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent by 2050.

DEWA’s current capacity is 10,413MW, with clean energy producing 413MW.

By 2020, clean energy will produce 1,313MW in Dubai, and the total electricity generation capacity in in the emirate is projected to reach 14,085MW including solar power.
