Dubai’s DEWA Awards Dhs76m Contract For New Substation In Jumeirah

The Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA) has awarded a contract worth Dhs76 million to build a substation in Jumeirah to meet the emirates’ growing demand for electricity.

The 132/11kV substation is one of the projects that DEWA has launched to build the city’s power capacity, it said in a statement.

No details were disclosed about the project’s completion date and who the contract was awarded to.

“The project further strengthens the capacity of DEWA’s networks to transfer electricity to Jumeirah and improve the efficiency and reliability of DEWA’s networks across these thriving areas and ensures continuity and stability of supply to all consumers at all times,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA.

Al Tayer added that these stations employ the latest digital substation technologies that support the reliability and efficiency of the stations and eventually support Dubai’s constructions plans and ambitions for economic growth.

DEWA has commissioned a number of substations across the emirate to meet the growing demand for electricity.

The utility provider commissioned a Dhs118 million substation at Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZ) earlier this year. The substation has a capacity of 150 megavolt ampere (MVA) and was built at the cost of Dhs86 million, DEWA said.

DEWA also opened a new Dhs500 million Warsan Complex and Al Qusais Control Centre earlier this year to cater to Dubai’s energy needs.

Spread across 650,159 sq ft, the Warsan Complex includes two transmission and distribution control centres and an administrative building which can accommodate up to 2,350 employees.

The Al Qusais Control Centre includes distribution, planning, and coordination departments, a library, the distribution R&D department, a simulator, and on-site distribution management.

Dubai’s electricity demand is estimated to grow by 20 per cent as the emirate gears up to host Expo 2020, according to DEWA officials.
