Dubai’s JLT metro stop renamed

Free zone operator Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) on Monday announced the renaming of the Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) metro station effective immediately.

The decision will mean the Dubai Metro stop, which connects to the southern end of the JLT free zone and Dubai Marina, is labeled as DMCC going forward.

The government authority said it took the decision in order to highlight its “ongoing effort to develop, enhance and connect the JLT district, host to a growing community of over 100,000 people who live, work and visit the area”, according to Dubai Media Office.

DMCC is currently working on an expansion to the zone’s 68 commercial and residential towers via the Uptown Dubai mixed-use project.

The district, formerly known as Burj2020, will include more than 10 million square feet of grade A commercial and residential space, hotels, over 200 retail and food and beverage outlets and 3,000 residences.

Other features include a central entertainment plaza, seven high-rise towers across seven levels of podium and two iconic super-tall towers designed by architects Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill from Chicago, who are also behind the the 1km Kingdom Tower under construction in Jeddah.

“The metro station plays a central part in our mobility plans; connecting and integrating our community with Dubai and ensuring individuals can commute with ease,” said DMCC executive chairman Ahmed Bin Sulayem.

“In addition, the last few years have seen greater changes to urban mobility, and as part of our Smart District programme, we are looking at innovative solutions that will improve all aspects of travel to and from the world’s leading free zone at DMCC.”

The organisation said it also planned to provide an air-conditioned indoor walkway for pedestrians from the DMCC metro station to its headquarters in Almas Tower at the centre of JLT and on to Uptown Dubai, which is located directly south of the metro on a strip of land across the road from Cluster N.

The Dubai metro carried 103.292 million people in the first half of the year and is currently being expanded with a direct link to the Expo 2020 site and nearby developments.
