Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the start of construction work on a new cycling track, worth Dhs32 million, as part of the emirate’s Bicycle Master Plan.

The new track will connect the existing cycling path at Seih Assalam to Mohammed bin Zayed Road and onwards to Nad Al Sheba.

“The Dubai Cycling Track project has been initiated to cater to the needs of the public and identified in a comprehensive study commissioned by the RTA,” said Maitha Bin Udai, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA.

“The plan envisages the optimal utilisation of cycling paths constructed within the right-of-way, and adopting specific criteria for separating them from vehicular movement by using internationally recognised traffic signs.”

She added that the RTA is looking to construct more cycle routes that will link residential areas with public facilities such as parks and malls.

The RTA’s previously completed cycle tracks include a 23km long route along Jumeirah Street, a 1.4km track along Street No 7 linking Jumeirah Street with Al Mankhool Street, a 1.6km track at the Mall of the Emirates station, a 67km track across Seih Assalam Road and Al Qudra Road and a 11km track in Bur Dubai covering Al Fuhaidi, Al Falah, Al Ghubaiba and Al Hisn Roads.

Recently, the public transport agency opened a nine-kilometre long bicycle track alongside the Dubai Tram.

Dubai has been ramping up its sustainable transport network as part of plans to cut carbon emissions.

This includes the Dubai Bicycle Master Plan, which aims to make the city more cyclist-friendly by providing 850km of track.
