Dubai-based private healthcare company Thumbay Group has announced plans to set up a massive 400-bed teaching hospital in Ajman.

The facility will be the biggest private academic hospital in the region when completed in 15 months, the company said in a statement.

Located within the Gulf Medical University, the hospital will be spread across 3,20,000 square feet with four floors and over 120 clinics. It will feature a special robotic pharmacy – a first of its kind in the region – and a full-fledged radiology department with PET-CT scan.

The hospital’s laboratory will be connected to Thumbay Labs and the Center for Advanced Biomedical Research and Innovation via an unmanned chute to offer specialised tests and diagnostic facilities.

The healthcare services at the hospital will be offered at “affordable costs,” the company said.

Along with the teaching hospital, Thumbay is also developing a 60-chair dental hospital and a rehabilitation centre within the Gulf Medical University campus.

The dental hospital will be constructed across an area of 30,000 sq ft spread over three floors. The rehabilitation centre will offer sports medicine, a hydrotherapy unit, a GAIT analysis lab and an ergonomic simulation lab. It will also provide specialised physiotherapy services in the fields of musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory, neurology, pediatrics and women’s health.

The new facilities are part of a wider Dhs 1.2bn expansion plan that the group is undertaking regionally and internationally.

Founder president Thumbay Moideen confirmed that the group plans to open 15 more hospitals, 25 labs, 100 pharmacies, 25 Nutri Plus Vita outlets and 25 outlets of Zo & Mo Opticals in the next five years.

It also aims to have three more university campuses in Ghana, Malaysia and India by the end of 2020.

The company also plans to add eye hospitals and fertility centres to its portfolio.

Among the new hospitals coming up, the ones in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Ghana are already in progress, the statement said. Further details are expected in the next few months.

With the completion of the above projects the group will employ 6,000 people in the next two years and have a total staff count of 15,000 by the end of 2020, it said.

As part of its strategic plans, Thumbay is also focussing on boosting medical tourism in the United Arab Emirates. It will open representative offices in 20 countries to educate people about the medical facilities and services available in the country, the statement said.

“The International Medical Tourism department of Thumbay Hospitals aims to cater to an extensive number of patients and to be known as the preferred hospital for medical tourism in UAE,” said vice president Healthcare Division Akbar Moideen Thumbay.

“We expect to have about 1,000 medical tourists daily at our hospitals in the next five to six years. It is ambitious but achievable.”
