An earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter Scale was recorded close to the southern Saudi city of Dhahran Al Janub on Sunday morning, the Saudi Geological Society reported.

Tariq Abal Khail, spokesman for the General Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Protection agency, confirmed that the quake was recorded at 7.29 on Sunday morning, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

He said the quake hit 70 kilometres south of Dhahran.

Some residents of nearby cities felt tremors, but none of the regions witnessed any serious impact.

The quake was caused due to the “existence of cracks” scattered across the region, he added.

This is the second quake to hit the kingdom this year.

In January, a 2.5 magnitude earthquake was experienced in the Saudi holy city of Madinah.
