Home Transport Aviation Emirates and Etihad among the world’s top 10 safest airlines Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific tops the list, as compiled by the Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre by Tanvi Bajaj August 23, 2015 The Trigana Air crash in Indonesia earlier this month, which left 54 people dead, is the latest in a series of aviation tragedies across the world that have rocked the industry. Earlier this year, an aircraft operated by Lufthansa’s Germanwings airline was allegedly crashed by the co-pilot in the French Alps killing all the 148 people on board. According to the Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre, the number of deaths caused by airline accidents rose 400 per cent year-on-year in 2014 to reach almost 1000 fatalities. However airlines in the United Arab Emirates, including Emirates and Etihad Airways, are among the safest carriers in the world, JACDEC’s latest ranking of the world’s safest airlines has found. The centre ranks airlines annually on a safety index calculator that is based on eight components including annual revenue passengers kilometres, international safety benchmarks and the number of total losses and accident-free years. While Dubai-based Emirates was ranked second on the list, Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways fell two spots to the 10th position this year. The latter’s drop in ranking is likely due to repeat incidents of rejected take-offs and hydraulic failure. The other major airline from the region, Qatar Airways, was ranked 21, a huge drop from last year’s 11th place, most likely as a result of multiple technical issues in 2014 such as repeat incidents of engine and gear failure upon departure. Overall, Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways topped the list with consistent accident-free revenue traffic, no deaths and zero hull loss events in the past 30 years.
