Emirates SkyCargo Begins Operations At Dubai World Central

Emirates SkyCargo’s freighter fleet began operations today from its new cargo terminal at Dubai World Central’s (DWC) Al Maktoum International Airport following months of construction and testing.

The new cargo terminal received its first Emirates SkyCargo Boeing 777 Freighter from London Heathrow this morning, carrying more than 100 tonnes of cargo.

Two hundred and fifty staff have started work on site, and another 250 will join them when the second phase of the project is completed in September.

The new terminal can accommodate 700,000 tonnes of cargo per year, but will be able to handle up to one million tonnes if further expanded.

“The planned move of our freighter operations from Dubai International Airport to Dubai World Central Al Maktoum International Airport is the next step in Emirates SkyCargo’s overall expansion and growth programme. It provides us with a brand new facility for our freighter operations and will increase capacity and enable us to meet our long-term objectives,” said Nabil Sultan, Emirates divisional SVP, Cargo, at the start of operations.

Emirates SkyCargo’s fleet includes 12 freighters, 10 Boeing 777 Fs and two Boeing 747-400 ERFs, which fly to more than 50 destinations around the world.

The terminal infrastructure also includes 80 truck parking spaces, 12 aircraft stands and 46 truck docks.
