Emirates to use SAF on flights departing Singapore and Amsterdam

Neste has expanded its partnership with Dubai-based carrier Emirates to agree the supply of more than 3 million gallons of blended Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel at two key airports.

The sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will be blended with conventional jet fuel and will be supplied over the course of 2024 and 2025 for Emirates flights departing from Amsterdam Schiphol and Singapore Changi airports.

The blended SAF will comprise over one million gallons of neat SAF. This represents a blended ratio of over 30 per cent neat SAF combined with conventional Jet A-1 fuel.

Emirates says that the agreement with Neste will therefore represent the largest volume of SAF to be uplifted by any airline based in the Middle East and Africa to date.

“It’s one of the many initiatives we are focused on to reduce our carbon emissions, which includes operating fuel-efficient aircraft, stepping up our fleet renewal from 2024, in addition to driving operational fuel efficiency. We hope that the robust demand coming from Emirates and other airlines encourages the scaling up of SAF and other emerging clean propulsion technologies,” said Sir Tim Clark, president of Emirates Airline.

Emirates enhances sustainability-driven initiatives

In January, Emirates, in partnership with Neste and others, successfully completed the first 100 per cent SAF-powered demonstration flight utilising a Boeing 777-300ER operating on 100 per cent SAF in one engine.

The first Emirates flight that used blended SAF was from Chicago back in 2017. Since then, it has also uplifted SAF for flights from Stockholm, and currently operates flights from Paris, Lyon and Oslo with blended SAF.

Recently, Shell Aviation confirmed that it had reached an agreement with Emirates to supply the airline with more than 300,000 gallons of blended SAF for use at the airline’s hub in Dubai (DXB). It will represent the first time that SAF will be supplied through the DXB airport fuelling system. The airline will track that SAF delivery and its use data through the blockchain-enabled platform of Avelia.
