An Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi to Sydney was forced to turn back and make an emergency landing after one of its engines failed.

Flight EY450 landed safely at Abu Dhabi International Airport at 12:06pm following the incident, which occurred 32 minutes after take-off.

“The pilots and cabin crew carried out the emergency procedures before landing which they practice regularly during their routine training details. The crew are to be commended for their calm professionalism which ensured a safe outcome for all our guests,” and Etihad spokesperson said.

Screaming and crying could be heard in video footage shot by a passenger as the Boeing 777 plane came in to land.

The plane is now undergoing maintenance and the 329 passengers on-board have been provided with accommodation and rebooked on later flights.

Abu Dhabi International said other flights were disrupted, with landings stopped for a short time while the runway was inspected for debris.

One flight was diverted to Sharjah and another to Al Bateen Executive Airport before operations resumed at 12:50pm.
