Home UAE Abu Dhabi ADNOC unveils high-speed green hydrogen refuelling pilot station The station, located in Masdar City, will produce green hydrogen from water, using an electrolyser powered by clean grid electricity by Gulf Business November 26, 2023 Image: ADNOC/ WAM ADNOC has opened H2GO, the region’s first high-speed green hydrogen pilot refuelling station, to test a fleet of zero-emission hydrogen-powered vehicles. The station, located in Masdar City and operated by ADNOC Distribution, will produce green hydrogen from water, using an electrolyser powered by clean grid electricity. Hydrogen is an energy carrier that creates no carbon dioxide (CO2) when used. As a result, no carbon is released into the atmosphere from production to end-use. The pilot will be used to gather data to understand the long-term viability of hydrogen vehicles in the UAE. Musabbeh Al Kaabi, ADNOC ED – Low Carbon Solutions and International Growth, said, “We are pleased to launch this unique high-speed green hydrogen refuelling station which supports the UAE’s National Hydrogen Strategy. ADNOC continues to collaborate with local and international companies on innovative technologies and low-carbon solutions that can accelerate decarbonisation and support a responsible energy transition.” H2GO to check the viability of hydrogen vehicles in UAE The hydrogen supplied at the pilot station will be certified as ‘green’ from solar sources by International REC Standard, an internationally recognised certification organisation. The pilot is supported by the Integrated Transport Centre in Abu Dhabi, and the high-speed refueller was provided by Linde, a leading global industrial gases and engineering company. During the ‘pilot’ phase, hydrogen vehicles (provided by Toyota, Al Futtaim Motors, BMW) will be tested by taxi companies, including Tawasul. The H2GO station follows the launch of ADNOC’s E2GO JV to build and operate electric vehicle infrastructure in Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE. In other news, ADNOC Group partnered with Australia’s Santos to collaborate on carbon management and develop technology to accelerate decarbonisation throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The partnership allows the two entities to work together to advance critical carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies that are necessary to accelerate the decarbonisation of the oil industry worldwide, ADNOC said in a statement. ADNOC and Santos will also explore the development of a carbon dioxide (CO2) shipping and transportation infrastructure network to enable heavy-emitting sectors to capture, ship, and permanently store CO2. ADNOC has allocated an initial $15bn to advance lower-carbon solutions and develop decarbonisation technologies to reduce its carbon intensity by 25 per cent by 2030 and enable its Net Zero by 2045 ambition.
