Has gaming pipped banking as a more lucrative profession? Blast World Premier Final features $1m purse

While investment banking is known to churn out millionaires, another profession, arguably a more ‘fun’ one might just be giving it a run for its money.

One of the largest esports and gaming tournaments – the Counter Strike (CS:GO) Blast Premier World Final 2023, commanding a prize pool of $1m – is happening in the UAE this month.

The game of the tournament, Counter Strike, a first-person shooting game, pits teams against each other to see who is the last man/team standing. Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena will host the two day event on December 16 and 17.

The Blast World Premier Final 2023 will bring together top gaming teams from around the world including – Faze Clan and G2 Esports.

Gaming market

The tournament is being supported by Abu Dhabi Gaming (AD Gaming). AD Gaming, an initiative that supports game developers, players, consumers and businesses, comes under the UAE government’s Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi.

The UAE government’s push towards hosting esports and gaming tournaments follows the growth of the industry across the region. A report published earlier this year by Dubai Multi Commodities Centre underscored that the industry is being driven by the presence of a young and digital-savvy population, high levels of digital connectivity and sufficient government support in the region in its Future of Trade 2023 report.

Additionally, gaming revenue is predicted to double by 2027-28 in the Middle East and North Africa region. The current market size of $5.71bn in 2023 is expected to grow to $9.63bn by 2028, at a CAGR of 11.02 per cent during the forecast period (2023-2028), according to Mordor Intelligence.

Tournament format

The teams are split into two groups and will face off in a double-elimination format before six teams advance to the playoffs.

The grand finale is set to take place on Sunday, December 17.

“Blast Premier World Final promises to be a milestone moment for esports in the UAE and the Middle East, showcasing the region’s growing prominence in the global esports landscape,” said James Hartt, head of AD Gaming.

“It’s an opportunity for fans, gamers, and esports enthusiasts to come together, witness world-class competition, and celebrate their shared passion for gaming.”

2022 champions

The 2022 Blast Premier World Final, saw Germany’s G2 Esports take home the top prize of $500,000, with second place going to Team Liquid from the Netherlands, who received $250,000 in prize money.

Third place was shared between global team Faze Clan and Danish team OG, who each took home $85,000.

At the event

Tickets for the Blast Premier World Final are now available to purchase, and will set you back anywhere between Dhs160 to Dhs700 depending on the seats you choose. A package offer for both days are also available.

Gamers will also get the opportunity to meet esports champions, try out the latest titles, and consoles and experience what’s it like to compete on stage like a professional.
