Home Technology Artificial Intelligence How artificial intelligence can help reduce road accidents Daniel Avdagic, CEO of AV Living Lab explains some of the technologies to look out for in 2023 that will focus on road safety by Gulf Business November 21, 2022 What are the types of technologies driving the future of mobility? The future of the technology is electronic, shared, connected, autonomous and driven by data. To read data, we need technologies as artificial intelligence (AI). AI will be a key driver for mobility in the future. It will help an autonomous vehicle read the road, comprehend the radar, understand the computer vision and make decision, as well as also be used for route optimisation – going from A to B. When AI is added to mobility, it will generate comfort, convenience and entertainment. How can AI help reduce road accidents? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.3 million people die annually as a result of road traffic crashes. Between 20 and 50 million more suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability. With the use of AI, road accidents can be curbed, particularly in the metaverse, which brings together technology and science to reduce human error. This can help with accurate driver assessment, driver profile based on driving skills, better collection and analysis of crash data and more. Is AI also equipped in monitoring cameras, warning signals? Traffic sensors are specialised in detecting ‘simple’ traffic incidents, such as cars driving through red lights or exceeding speed limits. They also help detect street conditions quantitatively, example, counting passing cars, enabling human operators to recognise traffic jams, before they occur. Internet-of-things sensors send information to a data centre where AI performs different things as congestion measurement. Recognising the licence plate of a fast-passing car in poor conditions, traffic insights from activity on roads and more. So, with every year we see more and more deployment of these solutions with ultimate goal to achieve zero accidents society which is part of the UAE vision 2030. How do you see the future of mobility? Mobility space is getting smarter and smarter with the implementation of AI. I believe that first thing that we will see by 2030 is vehicles opting to be electric. We will also see automation particularly in public sector like minibuses and taxis. So multiple applications will be introduced and soon AI will completely replace the drivers on the road, and this will eliminate human factor and road safety will be on the highest possible level. Around 10-15 per cent vehicles will be driven by integrated technologies in the coming years. What are some of the technologies to look out for in 2023 that will focus on road safety? AI driven metaverse comes as a top technology for me. Metaverse is the 3D environment where we don’t just walk and dance, but we can also drive in metaverse. We can build multiple situations in safe environment better than on public road. That’s not all, drivers can be trained, which can reduce the number of accidents improve driving behaviour, enhance road safety for billions of people around the globe and help achieve zero road accident society which is a part of the UAE Vision 2030.
