How Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Aysha AlMemari is pursuing her passion for healthcare

Tell us about your career path.
I received my bachelor’s degree in finance and banking from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). However, I realised this field was not my passion and was trying to explore something that would excite me. I became aware of the startup incubator at the university and decided to join it. Soon, I was working with the engineers who were developing a device for diabetics. This was my first introduction to the healthcare sector, which I realised was more aligned with my passion, as it entailed working closely with doctors and patients.

I then did an internship in Deloitte, which included providing consulting services in social work, before joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) in 2019 as a graduate trainee in the Strategic Alliances department. The supportive environment at CCAD inspired me to learn more about the healthcare industry and I was committed to pursuing my master’s in global health policy and management in the US as a Fulbright scholar.

I’m also a part of the Abu Dhabi Youth Council, in a part-time role, organising projects and initiatives, guiding and supporting the youth in my community, and encouraging any interest shown in pursuing a career in healthcare, as it is my passion. One of my most recent engagements in the council was moderating an event to raise awareness for the national programme for hereditary diseases.

Any career advice for other Emirati women?
Don’t limit yourself, keep exploring, and be open to learning and experiencing new things, as you may be surprised at what sparks interest and ignites motivation to pursue something unexpected.

What do you think about the current theme of Emirati Women’s Day theme: Inspiring Reality, Sustainable Future?
The theme has deeply resonated with me, I am privileged to be surrounded by women who inspire me every day to work towards creating a sustainable future for the UAE.

Tell us about an Emirati woman you admire.
Although I haven’t met her personally, I most admire Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak,  the ‘Mother of the Nation’, chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), president of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and supreme chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation for what she has done in supporting women to better themselves and pursue their education and work achievements. She has inspired numerous Emirati businesswomen to start their own businesses and has continued to support them as they have grown their brands into some of the biggest in the country.

Something that always stayed with me was what my mother – who also graduated from UAEU – told me. She said Sheikha Fatima used to attend every graduation ceremony that was hosted for the female batch to support them. Even today, she hosts an event for Emirati women to celebrate every high achiever in public universities.
