IndiGo Inks Airbus’ Largest Single Aircraft Deal

Rapidly growing Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo has signed an MoU with Airbus for 250 A320 neos (new engine options) which constitutes the European manufacturer’s largest single order by aircraft numbers.

While it is an MoU and not a firm order, it is a fillip for Airbus in the ongoing Max-or-Neo debate with Boeing – and indication of IndiGo’s commitment to the programme, coming on top of a previous order for 150 A320neos in June 2011.

Aditya Ghosh, President of IndiGo said the new order reaffirms IndiGo’s commitment to the “long-term development of affordable air transportation in India and overseas”. In truth, much of the focus for now remains on the domestic market.

The airline operates 83 A320s and 544 flights a day, connecting 36 destinations.

This month sees a ninth daily flight between Delhi and Bengaluru (from 26th) and sixth daily non-stop flight between Mumbai and Hyderabad. Last month it started a daily non-stop flight between Delhi and Jaipur.
