Home Industry Energy Korea Hydro & Nuclear staff to operate Abu Dhabi’s Barakah plant New agreement will see KHNP staff stationed at Barakah until 2030 by Robert Anderson July 24, 2016 Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has signed an operating support services deal with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power that will see the company dispatch personnel to the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant until 2030. Under the agreement, the Korean firm will provide main control room operators and local operator to support ENEC’s recently launched local operating subsidiary Nawah Energy Company. Read: UAE nuclear energy body ENEC launches operating subsidiary Around 400 KHNP staff will support operations at the Barakah site in Abu Dhabi’s Western Region until 2030. They will be required to pass regulatory exams to operate the APR-1400 nuclear units used at the site in the UAE. “We are entering a crucial phase in the development of the Barakah plant, and we are looking forward to working with the experts from KHNP to ensure the operational readiness of the Barakah plant,”said ENEC chief executive Mohamed Al Hammadi. “Over the next decade and beyond, the agreement will continue to build on and enhance the existing long-term nuclear energy partnership between the UAE and South Korea.” Construction of the Barakah plant began in 2012 and is due to be completed in 2020. The facility’s four units are now 66 per cent complete. ENEC announced last month that $3bn of contracts had been awarded for the plant’s construction.
