The new seats will initially be introduced onto the German carrier’s Boeing 747-8s and gradually rolled out on the entire long-haul fleet over the next year. Seats have 50 per cent more room than economy. The new seats will be located in a “clearly identifiable” separate premium economy compartment between business and economy. Each premium economy area will contain between 21 and 52 seats, depending on the aircraft type (A340 pictured). Premium economy passengers can check in two items weighing up to 23kg but must pay €25 to access the business lounges. Lufthansa, targeting 1.5 million passengers in the new class in its first year, hopes its Premium Economy will appeal to passengers seeking greater comfort than economy class, but at affordable fares. Virgin Atlantic was the pioneer and other carriers offering it include Air New Zealand.
