A massive fire that broke out at the Torch Tower in Dubai Marina early on Friday morning was put out by firefighters, with no injuries reported.

Plumes of fire and smoke were seen rising across the 86-floor tower after the fire broke out.

Firefighting squads from four Civil Defence stations were deployed to bring the fire under control and ensure the safety of residents, the Dubai Media Office tweeted. All the residents were evacuated to safety.

The Dubai Police commander in chief and the Dubai Civil Defence director general were also on site to oversee the operations.

At 3.30am, the Dubai Media Office confirmed that the blaze was extinguished.

A Dubai Police spokesperson told Gulf News that the fire started on the ninth floor and spread to the upper four floors of the building.

However, the cause is currently unknown.

“Dubai authorities are working on providing shelter at the Princess Tower for those affected by the Torch Tower fire. For inquiries, call 999,” the Dubai Media Office said.

This is the second time that the tower – believed to be the fifth tallest residential building in the world – has caught fire in the last two years.

The exact cause of the previous blaze in February 2015 is unknown but there was speculation that it was started by a barbeque or shisha coal left out on a balcony.

Authorities have since moved to tighten regulation on the external cladding of buildings in the emirate after several recent fires, including a major blaze at the Address Downtown hotel on New Year’s Eve 2016, were said to have spread more quickly due to the use of flammable materials.

When it opened in 2011, The Torch Tower was the tallest residential building in the world, standing at more than 330m high.

It later lost the title to the Princess Tower – located on the same road.
