Oman government taxi company to begin airport services

Oman government-owned taxi operator Mwasalat has announced it will soon begin services at Muscat International Airport with lower fares than previous operators.

The company’s taxis will operate from the airport starting on February 18, it said on its Twitter account.

The new day starting fare between 6:00am and 10:00pm will be OMR3 ($7.79) instead of the OMR6 ($15.58) charged by taxis at the airport previously.

However, the rate per kilometre will rise from OMR0.200 to OMR0.400 for the first 40km before lowering back down to OMR0.200 thereafter.

For night fares between 10:00pm and 6:00am the starting fare will be OMR3.6 ($9.35) with a per kilometre charge of OMR0.450 for the first 30km and OMR0.200 thereafter.

A minimum fare of OMR5 ($13) will be charged day or night and there is an additional charge of OMR1.500 ($3.90) for more than five passengers in a minivan.

Mwasalat began operations in December with the promise of offering the sultanate’s first metred and measured taxi fares.

Tourists and residents had previously complained that taxi drivers would often demand inconsistent and excessive fares from passengers due to a lack of metres.

This made using taxis in Oman significantly more expensive than the other Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
