Qatar To See Boost In Mobile Internet Speeds As Ooredoo Launches 4G+

Qatari telecoms operator Ooredoo announced that it has launched 4G+ services in certain parts of Doha, the first in the country, almost doubling existing internet speeds.

The 4G+ network, available for free to 4G customers, will offer speeds of up to double the current average 4G mobile internet speeds, a statement said.

The current available 4G speed offered to Ooredoo customers is up to 150 Mbps, and with 4G+, speeds could reach up to 225 Mbps in certain areas of Doha, it said.

Areas with access to the new service include the Corniche, West Bay lagoon, Katara, Souq Waqif, Al Rayyan, Shahaniya and Sealine.

However, customers will require 4G+ enabled devices that supports 800 or 2600 MHz frequencies to make use of the new network.

Ooredoo said it has launched three smart devices that will work with 4G+ frequencies, including the Samsung Alpha, Huawei Ascend Mate 7 and Huawei E5786 Mi-fi.

Ooredoo COO Waleed Al-Sayed, said: “This service truly puts us on the map as one of the most connected countries in the world and will provide the fastest and best LTE service in Qatar for our people.”

Also called LTE-A or LTE Advanced, 4G+ enables supported devices to combine multiple 4G frequencies in the same time, achieving up to double 4G speeds.

The technology is currently only available in some parts of the world, including the UK, South Korea, Japan and the US, among others.
