The GCC’s banking sector recorded a robust rate of growth in 2014, thanks to a recovering economy, high income levels and continued government investment in infrastructure projects.

Average net profit among the lenders grew by 14 per cent last year, compared to 10 per cent in 2013.

The vast majority of GCC banks remain solidly capitalised with comfortable levels of liquidity – helped by growing customer deposits – and good profitability.

Loan asset quality for the sector improved further in 2014 through a fall in non-performing loans and an increase in provision coverage.

In Qatar, net profit across the banks grew by 13.1 per cent last year.

Loan demand in Qatar remained robust with momentum led by an increase in public sector spending backed by several developmental initiatives taken by the government.

The country’s major lender Qatar National Bank remained the largest bank in the GCC in terms of assets, capital and net profit for the financial year of 2014.
