Revealed: Hidden gems that are exclusive to the UAE

The UAE is known for its high-rise skyscrapers and glitzy malls but what goes unnoticed to many are the hidden gems that preserve the heritage and culture of the UAE.

Be an explorer for a day and visit these often hidden hotspots to soak in some local feel.

1. Umm Al Quwain Mangroves
Better seen from inside the water, the Umm Al Quwain Mangroves offers a sense of serenity and peace to those who come visit it. Visitors can rent kayaks from the Kite beach centre and explore the mangroves independently or follow a guided tour.

2. Al-Ain Oasis
The one and only UNESCO World Heritage site in the UAE, Al Ain Oasis, is one of the world’s oldest permanently inhabited settlements, going back more than 4,000 years. It features a traditional falaj (a water system) that has been operational since 500AD.

3. Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary
Also known as the “Cape of the Creek”, this wetland is a regional hidden gem offering visitors the opportunity to spot over 450 species of birds. In the winter, visitors can see pink flamingos, grey egrets, reef herons and more.

4. Iranian Mosque
This outpost can be discovered near the Textile Souq, Dubai and is known formally as Ali Ibn Talib Mosque. The building is adorned with blue tiles and is one of two decorated Iranian Mosques in Dubai.

5. Al Wathba Fossil Dunes
Just a 30-minute drive from Downtown Abu Dhabi, these natural fossil dunes will surely and pleasantly surprise anyone who seeks them. Expect not much beyond the dunes, so be fuelled up (with food, water and petrol).

6. Masfout Mountains
A 90-minute drive from the centre of Ajman, this enclave is located among the Hajar Mountains, between Hatta, Ras Al Khaimah, and Oman. It is a favourite spot for hiking and mountain biking, while the old fort is not to be missed. Ensure to take the Sharjah-Kalba road to avoid the Oman border crossing.
