RTA to open Jumeirah Bridge this month as part of Canal project

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that the Jumeirah Bridge will be opened this month as part of phase II of the Dubai Water Canal project.

The six-lane flyover comprises three lanes in each direction and rises 8.5 meters above the canal.

The bridge will be opened in three phases – two lanes inbound from Jumeirah 3 outbound to Jumeirah 2 have already been opened on Saturday.

Two lanes coming from Jumeirah 2 heading towards Jumeirah 3 will be opened on Friday, July 15th.

And all the lanes will be in full operation in both directions starting from July 21.

Earlier this month, RTA opened the southern bridge on the Sheikh Zayed Road from Dubai to Abu Dhabi as part of phase I of the project.

That included the construction of an 800 meter-long bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road comprising eight lanes in each direction.

In June, RTA opened the Al Wasl Bridge consisting of three lanes in the direction of Dubai, two lanes in the direction of Abu Dhabi, and a two-lane ramp from Al Wasl Road to Al Aathar Road.

As part phase II of the project, a flyover from Al Aathar Road in the direction of Al Hadiqa Road across Al Wasl Road was also opened.

RTA director-general and chairman Mattar Al Tayer said: “Opening the Jumeirah Bridge means that RTA has finally accomplished all works in bridges crossing the Dubai Water Canal.

“Works would now focus on digging a sector of the canal underneath the bridges, building quay walls, constructing three footbridges linking the two shores and building 10 marine transport stations,” he said.

Works also include landfilling for making a synthetic peninsula along the stretch of Jumeirah Park, which would double its beachside, increase its area and allow for the addition of recreational activities.

“Work is progressing noticeably in phases IV and V of the Dubai Water Canal Project,” added Al Tayer.

The contract for phase IV includes infrastructural works for urban developments such as roads and utilities.

Meanwhile the phase V contract includes completing quay walls of the canal using precast concrete slabs and diverting utility lines and key services.

“Works also include the treatment of hyper-saline water of the Business Bay Lakes, removing sand barriers from the course of the canal and constructing three marine transport stations on both sides of the canal,” added Al Tayer.

The overall canal stretches 3.2 km from the Business Bay Canal up to the Arabian Gulf via the Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Road.
