Saudi Arabia and Greece sign agreements on energy, security, telecom, digital economy

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is on a two-day official visit to Athens, Greece.

As part of his tour, the two countries signed a number of agreements in several areas related to energy, security, military, culture and digital economy.

According to the state news agency SPA, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in the energy sector, was signed between the Crown Prince and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias.

The MoU sets a framework for bilateral cooperation in the fields of renewable energy, electrical interconnection, exporting electricity to Greece and Europe, clean hydrogen, energy efficiency, oil, gas and petrochemical industry.

In addition, it included adopting a circular economy approach to reduce the effects of climate change.

The MoU also promotes digital transformation and innovation in the fields of energy, cyber security, and working to develop qualitative partnerships between the two parties to localise materials, products and services related to all energy sectors and their associated supply chains and technologies.

Within the framework of this memorandum, joint research in the fields of energy with universities, research centers and others will be conducted. While working sessions, panel discussions, seminars, and multilateral conferences will be organised.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Telecom Company, the Greek Telecom Company and the Cyprus Telecom Company entered into a strategic partnership to build a data cable project, called Med Data Corridor (EMC) undersea and land fiber optic data cable that will link Europe with Asia. The cable project will ensure the smooth digital supply of data worldwide and strengthen the goals of the kingdom’s vision 2030.

The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, hosted a banquet at the Acropolis Museum in Athens for the Saudi Crown Prince. They also witnessed the signing of a preliminary agreement between the two countries for co-operation in the cultural sector.

Prince Mohammed also toured the archaeological site of the Acropolis in Athens. He was briefed on the archaeological buildings, areas and theaters contained in the Acropolis site, including the Erechtheion, the Belvadere, the Parthenon, the Theatre of Dionysus, and the ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus theatre.
