Saudi grants fixed-line telecoms licence to ITC

So far Saudi Telecom Company has been the sole provider of fixed-line services in the country

The Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) has granted a licence to Integrated Telecoms Company (ITC) to provide fixed-line services with infrastructure across the kingdom, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The decision will break the monopoly of Saudi Telecom Company (STC), which is currently the sole provider of fixed-line services in the country.

Abdul Aziz Al-Ruwais, governor of CITC, said the licence enables ITC to provide fixed telecommunications services throughout the kingdom and participate in the broadband deployment initiative to increase the deployment of fixed lines.

The move is aimed at “improving infrastructure, increasing the spread of broadband services and efficiency of the landline sector, as well as enhancing competitiveness in the provision of fixed telecommunications services by providing multiple options for users, and upgrading the ICT sector”, he said.

The licence is the first to be granted since the Saudi telecommunications law was amended, giving CITC the authority to issue licences for fixed-line services in the country.
