Saudi Arabia’s national airline Saudia has said its flights have been affected by a “system failure” even as pilgrims continue to arrive for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in the kingdom.

The airline did not reveal how many flights were hit by the issue, but said alternative methods were being taken to handle flights avoid delays, a statement said.

“Saudia has taken the necessary measures to contain the situation and reduce the effects of disruptions,” it added.

The carrier also said that the main operating room has been activated to closely monitor the situation and take further measures if required.

Saudia also apologised to passengers affected by the sudden disruption.

Close to 1.5 million pilgrims have already gathered in Saudi Arabia as they prepare to perform the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Hajj begins on the eighth day of the month of Dhu Al Hijjah, which falls on August 19 this year, and will end on August 24.
