He was admitted to the King Faisal Specialist Hospital on Monday to undergo medical tests due to cholecystitis – an inflammation of the gallbladder. He ascended to the throne following the death of his half-brother, King Abdullah, who ruled the kingdom from 2005 to 2015. Prior to that, he was the governor of Riyadh for a period of 48 years from 1963 to 2011, and also served as the Minister of Defense.
