Home GCC UAE Sheikh Khalifa pardons 439 prisoners ahead of Ramadan The ruler of Sharjah also pardoned 206 prisoners by Gulf Business April 12, 2021 Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, has ordered the release of 439 prisoners serving various sentences in the country, ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. The President also pledged to settle the financial obligations of the released prisoners, official news agency WAM reported. Sheikh Khalifa’s pardon ahead of the fasting month aims to enhance family cohesion, and provide released prisoners with an opportunity to re-think about their future and return to the righteous path. In a similar move, Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has also ordered the release of 206 prisoners from the punitive and reformative institutions across the emirate, for good conduct considerations on the occasion of Ramadan. Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is a time when Muslims across the world fast from sunrise to sunset. The moon sighting committee in the UAE will meet virtually on Monday, April 12, after the maghrib prayer to indicate the start of Ramadan.
