Six Flags plans world’s biggest roller coaster in Dubai

The upcoming Six Flags theme park in Dubai could house the world’s biggest roller coaster, according to reports.

The theme park, coming up within the Dubai Parks and Resorts complex, is scheduled to open in 2019.

Construction of the Dhs2.6bn park – in partnership with US operator Six Flags – has already started.

Six Flags “has pledged to build the world’s biggest roller-coaster ride in Dubai”, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

“There will be rides that are bigger, better, faster, broader than any rides in the world,” the report quoted John Odum, senior vice president of international park operations at Six Flags, as saying.

Dubai Parks had said in the past that the the attraction would feature at least three ‘world record breaking’ rides. It will feature six roller coasters, four aerial attractions, a 340-metre rive rapids ride and three performance spaces.

In total it will include 27 rides and attractions across six themed zones: Thrillseeker Plaza, Magic Mountain, Fiesta Texas, Great Escape, Great Adventure, and Great America.

The park will be the fourth at the Dubai Parks and Resorts complex, which also includes Hollywood themed motiongate, Bollywood Park Dubai and Legoland Dubai. They are all scheduled to open in October.

Although the Six Flags park in Dubai will be the first from the US operator in the Gulf, it is unlikely to be the only one. Earlier this year, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, who owns Dubai Parks’ parent company Meraas, gave Six Flags permission to break a regional exclusivity deal in Saudi Arabia.
