The fourth unit of the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant has been completed, bringing the facility one step closer to generating a quarter of the country’s power needs
Barakah’s three commercially operating units are already generating more than 30TWh of zero-emission electricity all year round
The agreement covers cooperation in nuclear energy operations, in high-temperature gas-cooled reactors and fuel supply and investment
Unit 3 will add another 1,400 megawatts of zero-carbon emission electricity capacity to the national grid
Unit 2 will add a further 1,400MW of clean electricity to the grid when at full capacity
The announcement comes within five months of the start of commercial operations of Unit 1
Electricity produced at the Barakah Plant feeds into the national grid in the same manner as other energy plants
The Abu Dhabi Executive Council issued a decree to transfer ENEC to ADQ’s ownership
This follows the synchronisation of Unit 1 to the national power grid in August
Located in Al Dhafrah, the Barakah plant is one of the largest nuclear energy new build projects in the world
ENEC is currently in the final stages of construction of units 2, 3 and 4 of the plant, while the overall construction of four units is more than 94 per cent complete
