Home Lifestyle Auto The 10 Fastest Cars In The World Gulf Business looks at the fastest production cars on the planet. by Neil Churchill June 24, 2013 The UAE and its neighbouring GCC countries are home to some of the highest rates of supercars on the planet, which implies one sure thing: people here like to go fast. Below are the ten fastest production cars on the market today, ranked by top speed. Concept cars are not included. 1. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport Top speed: 429 km/h – 267 mph 0-100 km/h: 2.3 seconds Cost: $2.4 million Having lost its title of the fastest car in the world in 2007, Bugatti reclaimed the top spot with the Veyron Super Sport in 2010, clocking a top speed of 429 km/h. Its huge 8 litre, W16 engine produces 1,200 hp, that’s 199 more horsepower than the original Veyron, which had a top speed of 407 km/h. 2. Hennessey Venom GT Top speed: 418 km/h – 260 mph 0-100 km/h: 2.5 seconds Cost: $950,000 The closest challenger to Bugatti’s crown, the Venom GT gets the most from a 6.2 litre, LS9 turbocharged V8 engine, also producing 1,200 hp. Hennessey believe the car has the potential to reach 442 km/h, which would propel it ahead of the Super Sport, but that speed is still to be tested and proven. 2. Koenigsegg Agera R Top speed: 418 km/h – 260 mph 0-100 km/h: 2.9 seconds Cost: $1.6 million A tie for second spot. While all of its 1,099 horsepower is fired out of a 5 litre, V8 engine with twin turbos, what makes the Agera R unique amongst supercars is its penchant for Winter sports. The top of the range Koenigsegg can be fitted with a ski box as well as Winter tyres, so don’t be surprised to see one of these at Europe’s most exclusive ski resorts. 4. SSC Ultimate Aero Top speed: 413 km/h – 257 mph 0-100 km/h: 2.7 seconds Cost: $654,400 What was once the fastest car in the world – between the months of March 2007 to July 2010 – the SCC (Shelby SuperCars) Ultimate Aero uses a twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 1,183 horsepower. Its new sibling the Tuatura is expected to take over the mantle of SCC’s fastest car, and possibly even beat the Bugatti into top spot. 4. 9ff GT9-R Top speed: 413 km/h – 257 mph 0-100 km/h: 2.9 seconds Cost: $695,000 Another tie. What is essentially a customised Porsche 911, the GT9-R is fitted with a 4 litre, flat-6, twin-turbo engine, producing 1,120 hp. Such is its bespoke creation, all GT9-R’s are modified to the buyer’s taste with only 20 models ever made. 6. Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo Top speed: 399 km/h – 248 mph 0-100 km/h: 2.8 seconds Cost: $555,000 The Saleen S7 has an old school ‘90s look about it which just screams speed. A real tarmac-eater. Its all-aluminum, V8 engine with twin turbos produces 750 hp. 7. Koenigsegg CCX Top speed: 394 km/h – 245 mph 0-100 km/h: 3.2 seconds Cost: $545,568 The Swedish manufacturer makes a second appearance in the top ten, this time with the CCX and its 90 degree V8 engine producing 806 hp. 8. McLaren F1 Top speed: 386 km/h – 240 mph 0-100 km/h: 3.2 seconds Cost: $970,000 Built in the late 1990s, the Mclaren F1 was an icon of its age becoming the world’s fastest ever road car in 1998 and probably the greatest supercar of the 20th Century. It still sits among the fastest cars in the world today thanks to its 60 degree, V12 engine producing 627 hp. 9. Zenvo ST1 Top speed: 374 km/h – 233 mph 0-100 km/h: 2.9 seconds Cost: $1,225,000 The 100 per cent Danish made ST1 is the first attempt at a supercar by Zenvo, and they’ve set the bar pretty high for themselves. Each of the 15 models in existence are assured of ‘flying doctors’ should their 7 litre, twin-charged V8 engines ever come into trouble. 10. Gumpert Apollo Top speed: 362 km/h – 225 mph 0-100 km/h: 3 seconds Cost: $450,000 The Gumpert Apollo was allegedly designed with such power and traction that it would be able to drive upside down in a tunnel at speeds of 321 km/h. While no one is known to have tested that theory yet, it’s 4.2 litre V8 engine and 650 hp should fill any stunt driver with confidence.
