Tunisia bans Emirates from landing in Tunis

Tunisian women had previously been barred from boarding Emirates flights

Emirates airline has been banned from landing in the capital of Tunisia after preventing a number of Tunisian women from boarding its flights.

Officials in Tunis have barred the carrier from touching down in the capital due after the airline stopped the country’s women from flying to or transiting through the UAE at the weekend.

Emirates confirmed in a tweet that it would stop flights between Dubai and Tunis today (Monday) until further notice, without giving a reason. The airline wrote: “Emirates will stop services between Tunis and Dubai, as instructed by the Tunisian authorities, with effect from December 25, 2017.”

While the UAE said that “security information” had caused the original delays, and that the temporary ban had already been lifted, Tunisia’s transport ministry said that the landing-ban would stay in place until the UAE was able to “operate flights in accordance with law and international agreements”.

On Sunday, the UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, wrote on Twitter: “We contacted our Tunisian brothers about security information that necessitated taking specific procedures,” adding: “We highly value Tunisian women and respect them.”
