The country was last on red alert in 2009, during the H1N1 virus outbreak that resulted in 250 deaths. South Korea confirmed there have been four deaths among coronavirus patients, with the total number of cases tallying 556. South Korean President Moon Jae-in declared the city of Daegu and the neighboring county of Cheongdo “special management zones for infectious diseases,” which would allow a full-scale support from the government for personnel, equipment and other supplies needed to fight the epidemic.
