UAE ministry clarifies overtime pay during Ramadan

All employees in the UAE are eligible to get paid overtime if they work for additional hours during Ramadan, the ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has clarified.

During Ramadan, the working hours for private sector establishments, institutions and companies is reduced by two hours. Meanwhile public sector employees in the UAE work for five hours per day during the holy month.

Taking to Twitter, the ministry said that an employee working for extra time during Ramadan will be entitled to an additional payment.

Those working for additional hours before 9pm will be eligible to 25 per cent of their normal wage, it said.

Meanwhile employees who work overtime between 9pm and 4am will have to be paid 50 per cent of their normal salaries, the ministry added.

The holy month of Ramadan, which began on Monday, May 6 in the UAE, is a time when Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.

Eid Al Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal, will be celebrated with a long break in the country.
